Ok, I've been chompin' at the bit for this Abramoff scandal to bear some REAL fruit. So far it's been nothing but appetizers. If you are not familiar with this scandal take a look at this helpful graphic. This ought to make a

good movie. There, that's better. But honestly I've been thinking about a more appropriate political thriller. I mean those two words seldom bear fruit when combined. But to borrow from All The President's Men, and apparently

Wal-Mart 22? Who are they, you wonder? The 22 Democrats that supported letting Wal-Mart know in advance when the Department of Labor is going to investigate them. You know, so they can hide all the evidence.

Is there a connection between Wal-Mart AND Abramoff AND Clyburn AND Thompson? I mean if there WAS, then it is up to us (democrats) to do something about it. And maybe out of the wreckage we could drag down
Tom DeLay and his cronies even quicker. It does look like DeLay's trial won't
delay. Unfortunately it looks like it is going to speed forward without all the facts. The Whitehouse is noted to be "pissed at [Bill] Frist" and wants their "hammer" back. The Democrats seem to be content with just the negative cache of

See yesterday's post.How could the Attorney General argue that the POTUS already has the authority under the Patriot Act to do whatever it takes in the War On Terror if the president said he would be required to get a court order for a wiretap?
Either:
1) He was lying that day, in effect would say anything to get the Patriot Act supported.
2) He was affirming the truth about his authority and knowingly broke the law in respect to domestic spying.
3) He is mentally ill or so stupid he cannot tell the difference.
#1 Should demand at least a censure, and a firing of most of his cabinet.
#2 Well beyond High Crimes and Misdemeanors.
#3 Is there a measure in the articles of Impeachment if the POTUS is mentally incompetent? I reckon that would have come up during the Reagan yrs... If there isn't there should be.

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today asked four presidential scholars for their opinion on former White House Counsel John Dean's statement that President Bush admitted to an "impeachable offense" when he said he authorized the National Security Agency to spy on Americans without getting a warrant from a judge.
Boxer said, "I take very seriously Mr. Dean's comments, as I view him to be an expert on Presidential abuse of power. I am expecting a full airing of this matter by the Senate in the very near future."
Boxer's letter is as follows:
On December 16, along with the rest of America, I learned that President Bush authorized the National Security Agency to spy on Americans without getting a warrant from a judge. President Bush underscored his support for this action in his press conference today.
On Sunday, December 18, former White House Counsel John Dean and I participated in a public discussion that covered many issues, including this surveillance. Mr. Dean, who was President Nixon's counsel at the time of Watergate, said that
President Bush is "the first President to admit to an impeachable offense." Today, Mr. Dean confirmed his statement.
This startling assertion by Mr. Dean is especially poignant because he experienced first hand the executive abuse of power and a presidential scandal arising from the surveillance of American citizens.
Given your constitutional expertise, particularly in the area of presidential impeachment, I am writing to ask for your comments and thoughts on Mr. Dean's statement.
Unchecked surveillance of American citizens is troubling to both me and many of my constituents. I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter as soon as possible.

If you examine you ranking of approval ratings on SurveyUSA of US Senators, you will note that senators Burr and Dole are south of the top half of the class. Ms Dole is ranked #63 and Mr Burr garnered a pitiful 88th place out of 100.
We are the 12 largest state by population. Voters in North Carolina require better and more ethical service than they are getting. Do not go down the road of moral subterfuge sneaking in legislation to drill in ANWR into a Defense Bill. You KNOW this will only provide a few months worth of fuel and will cause many lifetimes worth of environmental hazard. Do the right thing. Do not support this back-door method of purveying pork to the oil barons. It is unethical and you will be held accountable in coming elections.

I'm sick and tired of our guys getting killed overseas to protect freedoms the administration is doing its best to curtail in America.
The Patriot Act reauthorization bill before Congress is inadequate. It's bad law and needs to be reformed. I urge you to support the bipartisan group of Senators in blocking this version. A filibuster is the only chance we have to fix the Patriot Act. It should not be reauthorized until it includes needed protections on the privacy and freedoms of ordinary Americans.

My good friend Chris (see unlike those arseholes at the NYT and WaPo I give people's names, not "an anonymous source"
) anyway, Chris said that yesterday the NC BOE disqualified Sequoia from bidding to get the contract to make all of the voting machines in the state. Too bad for Chris. He had to sit through the 3+ hour presentation by Sequoia to find out later they'd been disqualified.
The reason, he didn't know. Maybe they refused to hand the election to any republican candidate like the other two. The other two vendors are run by brothers (Diebold, ESS) and one of them pledged to screw the election in favor of the republicans. So maybe that is where Sequoia messed up. Maybe they were going to put screwing the election up for bids. That'd be damned near democratic. Heh. We are so f%cked.
Oh and the EFF is suing the state of North Caroline BOE. In your face CNN!

More 'intelligent design' hyjinks: Wichita EagleUniversity of Kansas religious studies professor Paul Mirecki said that the two men who beat him made references to the class that was to be offered for the first time this spring.
The class was offered to debunk the 'Intelligent' Design mythology. Mirecki was
