ok, this weekend in rock wasn't

a/k/a: the oscar free film zone

Vocational irregularities prevented Charlotte's premier doombilly band from getting together this weekend. However, I did meet with Jimmy and Eric Cook to re-record "Billy Pilgrim Again" and a new song called "Boudicia." So once again TYSM gets 100% of expected goals met. The Blots score a ZED again. I felt like crap the next day as my sinuses have been giving me fits. One of my tear-ducts seems jammed with flotsam as well. I spent sunday in a 20' radius of the futon. In the post-cable era I find myself in, I luckily had procured three flicks from the library. It must've been 'foreign film weekend' or some such...

Federico Fellini's Roma
I still don't know what this was about (aside from the geographic 'place' reference). But it was very enjoyable. "A virtually plotless,
gaudy, impressionistic portrait of Rome through the eyes of one of its
most famous citizens.
" -Yep that's about it. I must get some more Federico Fellini films... (duh)
Plein Soleil
This is the movie that was wholeheartedly remade into "The Talented Mr Ripley"
years later. I never saw "Mr Ripley" but I can only guess it was just some
hollywood dogs eating some french vomit. 'Purple Noon' was engaging and
extremely well shot. The VHS tape was marked as "Martin Scorcese presents..."
which I am still not sure what that means? I am guessing since I didn't
see his name in any of the credits that he shelled out some $ to get this
released in America. Oh yeah, he paid for the reprint. Fair enough. Thanks
Marty.
Oligarkh
This is the story of a rise of a group of capitalists in Gorby's Russia. There are numerous container comparisons to 'Scarface' and 'Godfather' but I
don't see it. It wasn't a bad flick. This seems to be more of a dramatized
version of the Mikhail
Khodorkovsky
story. The only difference being that then ending appears
to be coming out completely hollywoodized and well, not with the Yukos
head rotting in prison.

Friday night I also watched Singin' In The Rain with my child. If your kid loves singing/dancing movies this is really a treat for them. Plus it's a movie about a movie about a movie.

>You can explain to your child such unthinkables as, "Movies used
to be silent. The also used to be in black and white.
"

As predicted, no amount of nudity could get me to watch much more than a few
moments of Wham Bam Thank You Spaceman. Undoubtedly the biggest achievment for this 'film' will
have been giving name to Eric/Jimmy's band: thank
you, spaceman
.

I did watch all of The Clash:
Westway to the World
. This is a really good documentary on the Clash. The only shortcoming would have to be the insipid tendency for Letts & co. to cut away from some really great live footage of the band to intersperse the commentary of the principal players. Especially in this age of DVDs,the extras section would have been a great place to let at least SOME of those live tracks play all the way through.

Hope you all have a groovy weekend

Things are coming along on the Blots frontier. We have eight (or 9) songs. I have one to spring on them tomorrow's practice. And Eric Cook has one he's downgraded from thank you, spaceman. Heh. There's a lot of incest going on with the former Frocky Jack, the new band [the blots], and Eric Cook's sideproj (tysm). Anyway, this week has sucked at work. I'm looking forward to getting my rock on tomorrow morning.
Worldwide, as you know things are still fuckedupbeyondallrecognition. I mean with the ratarses at Gator (a spyware company) being assigned to the Homeland Security Privacy council, Dildos being outlawed in OK (Steers and queers I tell ya!)...but 10am tomorrow the only thing I got to do is keep from going deaf. Doombilly has no internet at home anymore. So enjoy the silence.

May the Government be damned for it (Phil Gyford: Writing)
Yeah Brian (Labour MP for Hackney South & Shoreditch) Sedgemore, stick it to the man!

I remind my hon. Friends that a gulag is a black hole into which people are forcibly directed without hope of ever getting out.

I have to say, the parliamentary form of democracy is a lot more enjoyable to watch. (ultimately from BoinBoing)

God created love; God created boobs too :

metabloggin': COPYFIGHT. Grrrrrrrrrr. There are plenty of things I find offensive, yet you don't see the doombilly clamoring to paint them over. I thought Michigan was one of those gritty, tough, northern states. It turns out there are as backwards as the southern bible-belt.

metabloggin' Mykeru.com: of right-winged honey pots
metabloggin' Wonkette: Got Jeff?
Hahahahaha. That's way funnier than Paris Hilton getting booed off stage. So by "values" the right wing were just going on about "cheap man-love," right?

Update:
now with mooooore metabloggin': Salt Lake Tribune
"...when you have a changing media, it's not an easy issue to decide or try to pick and choose who is a journalist." - Scott McClellan White House Press Secretary.

I agree with John Yewell here:
"The White House press secretary doesn't know what a real journalist is..."

I mean, with today's changing face of terrorism it also stands to reason that the government can't be arsed to get actual anti-terrorist agents involved with protecting our people. It's much more important that we just pay people to lie to us.
big liar

you know, when I get sad...

I go to this link.

thank you, spaceman: an update

I mixed down what could be construed as side one of the ten tysm tracks last night.
They are prelim mixes so that Cookie can lookie and decide what (if any) overdubs he wants to make.
I am kind of halfway hoping he wants to play some analogue synth on there in a few spots. Just for shiggles.
I will probably create a myspace site for tysm so I can get a few mp3's out in cyberville. Stay tuned.

No Grammy For Me Again!
Gah durn it. What do I have to do? Get played on the radio or something?! Anyway, in other rock-n-roll news I did the replacement recording of thank you, space man this weekend. Finally mother nature gave us a reprieve. Actually the weather was quite agreeable. We set up the drums (Jimmy Van Poplin custom made these knockers) and the big hoss amp (Fender Bassman 70 head / Fender 1- 15" cab) in my finished basement room..errr studio. For the soundcheck they actually recorded the first two songs. We got the next day. By 3pm Jimmy was back on the road for Eastern, TN. So to say it went quickly, would be somewhat of an understatement. I recorded Eric Cook & Jimmy all live. 5 tracks of mic'd drums, two tracks of guitar, one vox. A special Tally Ho thanks goes out to audio wiz Scott Thompson for the loan of the 3 CAD drum mics, and the Sennheiser I used for one of the drum overheads. I got the Bassman amp down with a SM57 pointed slightly off axis on the big 15. As Eric Cook said, "John Holmes would say, 'That's one more'." The Bassman also has a direct recording out so I got that as well to ensure a guitar track with no drum bleed. I also bought a Blue Ball.

We used this for vocals. And I wish I would have A/B tested it against the AT30305 condenser I (ultimately) used for the other drum overhead. But initial reaction from the vocalist was positive. I'm gonna try and get this all prelim mixed for Eric to take a listen to at the next Blots practice Wednesday (re-scheduled from Sunday eve).
So look for me next grammy cycle. I'm sure to not get over looked next year, what with the Producer/Engineer AND Artist categories now. Heh.

CMS Schools Volunteer Arrested

"There was no indication to us he should not be involved at our school," said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools spokesperson Jerry Haigler (to the Charlotte Observer). And according to her he'd filled out the requested documentation. Well then his legal problems dating back to 1994 are no issue. Too bad they couldn't be arsed to just go to the arrest inquiry on CharMeck.org and type in "Duane Hill. If they had, they would have found:
MISDEMEANOR COMMUNICATING THREATS 6/9/02
ASSAULT OR SIMPLE ASSAULT AND BATTERY 6/27/02
and two more counts of
MISDEMEANOR COMMUNICATING THREATS 6/27/02

In case you are keeping score, or making Duane Hill felonious trading cards...here's his arrest from this week.
Arrest#: 01226644 PID#: 166513
Name : HILL, DUANE Alias:
Case Description Process
0001981001 PROBATION VIOLATION OFA
MISDEMEANOR 5000.00 SEC
0225837201 INJURY TO PERSONAL PROPERTY WAR
MISDEMEANOR 1000.00 SEC
0225837401 VIOLATING CIVIL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROTECTIVE WAR
MISDEMEANOR 1000.00 NBD
0225837501 TRESPASS - CRIMINAL DOMESTIC WAR
MISDEMEANOR 1000.00 NBD
0225837601 COMMUNICATING THREATS WAR
MISDEMEANOR 1000.00 NBD

MISDEMEANOR 10000.00 NBD
0002234401 PROBATION VIOLATION OFA
FELONY 10000.00 SEC

But apparently that was too much trouble for CMS to check out. I mean, what's wrong with the "honor system" for background checks? I mean, only a criminal would lie about a thing like that. Oh snap. Insert joke about Michael Jackson running a daycare here.

here we go again

Charlotte Observer | 02/11/2005 | Lawyer challenges assignment plan: "Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board members will hold an emergency meeting this morning after one of the nation's top civil rights attorneys challenged the constitutionality of the district's student assignment plan."

You know, it's got to be a FUNNY thing. I HAS to be. I mean, isn't this the student assignment plan that Eric Becoats got in trouble for selling to other school districts whilst on the clock for CMS? You know, the one wherein after catching him doing it, they basically gave him a paid vacation as punishment. Oh wait no. he resigned. He now manages "non-profit entities" for University Park Baptist Church's Economic Development efforts. It figures, you know...such a rampant capitalist like Becoats...he couldn't even get a job in the private sector. I guess when it comes down to more than selling assets that don't belong to him he's out of tricks. Still it makes you wonder? When you Google Jim Pughlsley, you come up with this quote by (School Board chairperson) "Coach" Joe White:
Pughsley could easily leave, and receive far more money than his current CMS salary.

Yeah, like he could be another officious waste of money in another municipality. I for one am up to giving him that opportunity as soon as possible.

Safety @ Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
Message from the Superintendent
In Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools ensuring that students are safe continues to be a priority for the district. Goals 2005 directly address safe and orderly schools, and the district has developed plans and strategies to keep schools safe. Recent media attention and community dialogue have created a heightened sense of awareness to this issue.

Dear Mr Pughsley;
It wasn't the media that created the "heightened state of awareness" it was your own inadequacy to create a safe environment for our kids to attend class.
Furthermore your advice of telling your children, 'Hey chances are you won't get killed at school today...' are less than reassuring. Way to prepare for greatness, Jim. How about you prepare for retirement by resigning? arsehat.

Meta: Creative Loafing - Charlotte. Low-Performing Schools? We Don't Think So
Teachers: Discipline problems and distrust of CMS management curb enthusiasm for Pughsley plan.

MetaMetaBlogBlogging~No Rock&Roll Fun-|-Slashdot
So, in a nutshell, then: Clear Channel feel they're incapable of programming a radio station that does anything than play the same few songs over and over again; and they've got some expensive research which backs up their timidity. You can hear it in their output, can't you?

I think you could just put it this way.
Dear ClearChannel, you friggin' suck. Stop making excuses or pretending to be cool. You are arse-lickers. Greedy, greedy arse-lickers. Face up to the fact that you are crap merchants. That's what you want to be. That's what you are. You are not fooling anyone. No one likes your programming. I hope you all die. Thank you, doombilly.

more fun with rocker quotes

Billy Zoom - "If I had my druthers, I'd still be playing R&B. I really liked that. I got out of it in the early '70s, when they started getting into funk. I didn't go there. I didn't do acid, so that whole Parliament/Funkadelic thing got kind of weird for me. I didn't want to wear the pink feathers and stuff."
